Journalling is an insightful habit to start. Getting into the practice of doing it now will help when it comes to stressful or busy times in our lives.
Taking a moment for yourself, even if it means getting up ten minutes earlier or staying up ten minutes later to sit and reflect alone is a great way to be mindful and present.
Journalling can help reduce stress and negative thoughts and boost your health and well-being. It allows you to process your emotions, let your creativity flow and discover parts of yourself you may have not sat and reflected on.
Letting it all out by putting pen to paper can allow you to see your concerns in black and white, and reflect on things you would like to change. Having time for ourselves to sit and reflect is priceless, we can get so caught up in life and its busyness, that setting aside that time is valuable for our minds.
Now, I know what you may be thinking; ‘I don’t have time for that, I have work, then the children and no time for myself’. So, my suggestion of one way to incorporate this into your daily routine, is associating it with something else you already do in your current routine. This is known as ‘habit stacking’. For example, when you brush your teeth in the evening, you could say to yourself ‘after I brush my teeth I will immediately go to the sofa and write for five minutes’.
The writing doesn’t have to be anything specific – you could just let your thoughts flow – even starting off with one word or sentence is something! Or it could be a good to idea to start with some reflective prompts if it feels uncomfortable at first. Either way, establishing this as part of your existing routine will give you some space to really feel and think about your emotions, and where we are constantly evolving, you will get to know yourself even better.
