Self-Care Tips

Grace considers if we're drinking enough water

This month, Grace considers if we're drinking enough water.

Ensuring we drink enough water every day is very important for our health.

Physically, drinking water can prevent dehydration (which results in other things such as a mood change, your body overheating, headaches, tiredness, unclear thinking, constipation and also kidney stones). Not only this, but drinking enough water has a positive effect on your skin – keeping it clear and healthy. It also aids your digestive system, is energy boosting and can help the health of your joints.

Mentally, water can improve your memory function and attention span. As the brain is 80% water, it helps your brain cells communicate with each other – which therefore impacts on your day massively. Not only this, but it clears out any toxins that can impair the brain function and carries nutrients to your brain to keep it healthy.
But how can you ensure you drink enough water with the upcoming months? It is cold, you just want a nice warm cup of something rather than making sure you have had the recommended 6-8 glasses a day…

Some ideas are below:
•    Get a refillable bottle – maybe even one with a timeline for how much you should have drunk by a certain time.
•    Set reminders.
•    Flavour your water – with fresh fruit or squash – a hot water with lemon first thing in the morning is especially good for reducing inflammation and cleansing the system!
•    Challenge a friend or colleague – sometimes both setting the same goal can help you motivate each other throughout the day.
•    Create a routine; for example, as soon as you wake up the first thing you do is have a glass of water.
•    Try sparkling water instead of still.
Having tea, coffee, squash and also by eating vegetables still gives you a water intake – it is just the added sugars to maybe keep an eye on!
There are many ways we describe and practice self-care. For many this concept of caring for oneself is new and taking care of others isn’t questioned. Considering others is a of course a wonderful quality and great celebration of community spirit, family, and humanity. We learn how to care from others within our environment growing up. Parents or carers often lead on this; as we grow, we witness, hear and at times challenge behaviours led by their core beliefs and values. Other environmental influences can come from our chosen communities such as friends, religious communities, social clubs and groups, TV, Media and of course algorithms from our internet activity and followers and those we chose to follow online.
