Self-Care Tips

Bobby looks at food and your mood

Many of us will have heard the famous quote by Hippocrates "Let food be thy medicine and let medicine be thy food"...but how many of us have stopped to think about what that really means.

Not only the actual food we eat, but also the way we eat it have a huge impact on our physical and mental health. We can tend to reach for 'comfort foods' when we are feeling low - but is it really food we are craving? Is there anything else which can help alleviate our low mood, like calling an old friend, going for a walk, playing with a pet,  picking up an old hobby etc.

When we cook or prepare food sometimes it can be begrudgingly or feel like its 'because we have to'  and the energy of this goes into the way we are feeling and the way we cook and ultimately into the food itself and the way we digest it- a meal made with love and joy will always taste better than one made with resentment. So if you can, try and cook with the intention of love and of using the food to heal yourself  rather than being resentful of the process.

When you eat, try and eat mindfully - don't eat whilst you're doing something else - especially not when you're distracted in front of a screen. Focus on the food you are eating- does your food uplift and nourish you?

Making the right choices with our food and our eating patterns can really help improve our mood.
