Nikki encourages us to go green … an antidote to the digital world
In writing this wellbeing tip, I am sat at a screen with very cold hands and feet and blue lips – many messages to reply to and various digital devices demanding time.
The sunshine has been scarce across the winter months and we’ve endured, seemingly, relentless greyness…. To me it seems all the more important to replenish our wellbeing by get amongst the green.
Beauty as there is in winter months, with tree branches silhouetted against sunrises and sunsets and the crispy coconut-ice frosted grass; but to boost inner bleakness we need to explore the green. It’s harder to notice in winter but is still out there and the promise of spring is imminent.
It’s common knowledge that going for a walk improves mood and energy, but walking or sitting in green spaces and noticing the greenery around us is proven to reduce stress, fatigue, anxiety and depression. ‘Going green’ can help to boost all of the above plus your immune system whilst potentially reducing the impact of chronic diseases, including asthma.
Put aside your phone (that’s a different wellbeing tip) as you take-in the green space around you and breathe deeply.
Look above eye height at the branches of trees. Is there blossom?
Notice the how the birds fly, listen to how they communicate with one another across the space you’re in. Hear the song of the robin or blackbird.
Observe how proficiently any squirrels manoeuvre from one tree to the next – like tree ninjas!
Pause and be in the moment.
Take pictures with your eyes (not your phone) and appreciate the space as an antidote to the digital world … you may gain some clarity of thought.
You could go one step further and invest in a small plant or two. Droplets of joy are on offer at seeing their growth and the response to TLC and nurture you have to share.
